Investigation into Lawrence Mudzingayima and Moriel Group

Overview

Zimbabwean businessman Lawrence Mudzingayima (also referred to as Mudzinganyama) is under investigation following a viral video depicting him making violent threats against women at a high-end restaurant in Sandton, South Africa. Mudzingayima issued a public apology, describing his behavior as “unacceptable and unjustifiable”. The restaurant owner has filed an intimidation case against him.

The incident has triggered a government review of his company, Moriel Infrastructure Group. South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy ordered the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) to investigate whether the firm legally secured its government contracts, including a R107 million tender. SANRAL confirmed it holds two active contracts with the group for projects on the N1 and N2 highways.

SANRAL also addressed allegations regarding its Gauteng provincial head, Progress Hlahla, clarifying that Hlahla was not responsible for the Moriel projects, as neither project is located within the Gauteng province.
