Newcastle disease outbreak in Santa Catarina triggers sanitary response

A confirmed outbreak of Newcastle disease at a commercial turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina, has mobilized a large-scale sanitary task force. Coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Integrated Development Agricultural Company of Santa Catarina (Cidasc), the operation involves 28 teams conducting epidemiological surveillance across 1,680 rural properties within a ten-kilometer radius of the focus.

As of recent reports, 352 properties have been inspected, including 256 subsistence farms and 96 commercial establishments. In the affected farm, authorities have completed the sanitary disposal of 6,526 turkeys and related inputs through technical burial methods. Disinfection and cleaning procedures are ongoing under veterinary supervision.

The outbreak has triggered international and domestic economic consequences. While China has implemented regionalized embargoes to allow poultry imports from other Brazilian states, countries like Mexico and Chile have applied restrictions. The Brazilian poultry industry faces potential production capacity reductions, and the sanitary emergency has been declared for several municipalities in the region to control animal movement and prevent further spread.
