Santa Catarina completes major beach nourishment projects

Major beach nourishment projects have been completed in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, aimed at combating coastal erosion and improving maritime infrastructure.

In Itapoá, a significant project has expanded 8.8 kilometers of coastline at Figueira do Pontal, Pontal do Norte, and Princesa do Mar beaches. This initiative, a collaboration between the Municipality of Itapoá and the Port of São Francisco do Sul, utilizes sediment dredged from the Babitonga Bay to deepen access channels for larger vessels. The project includes environmental measures such as planting 180,000 restinga vegetation seedlings and establishing a continuous dune system to stabilize the sand.

In Navegantes, a R$ 31.5 million investment resulted in a 70-meter widening of the sand strip at Praia do Gravatá. The 22-day operation used the dredge Galileo Galilei to transport sediment, expanding over 2 kilometers of the shoreline to restore areas previously lost to rising tides.
