Coastal erosion mitigation in Santa Catarina
Overview
Major beach nourishment projects have been completed in Santa Catarina, Brazil, to combat coastal erosion and enhance maritime infrastructure.
In Itapoá, a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Itapoá and the Port of São Francisco do Sul expanded 8.8 kilometers of coastline across Figueira do Pontal, Pontal do Norte, and Princesa do Mar beaches. The project utilized sediment dredged from Babitonga Bay to deepen access channels for larger vessels and included environmental stabilization efforts, such as planting 180,000 restinga vegetation seedlings and establishing a continuous dune system.
In Navegantes, a R$ 31.5 million investment facilitated a 70-meter widening of the sand strip at Praia do Gravatá. Using the dredge Galileo Galilei, the 22-day operation expanded over 2 kilometers of shoreline to restore areas lost to rising tides.
