Santa Catarina storms cause damage in 14 municipalities

Severe storms, including heavy rain, strong winds, and hail, have caused significant damage across 14 municipalities in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The most affected areas include the North Plateau and the South region.

In Bela Vista do Toldo, 42 properties were damaged. The neighboring municipality of Papanduva reported 40 damaged residences and has officially declared a state of emergency. In the South, a landslide in Braço do Norte displaced three families after three homes were evacuated due to risk. Other reported damages include a collapsed school wall in Gravatal, a destroyed residence in Alfredo Wagner due to a landslide, and structural damage to a school in Guarujá do Sul.

The Santa Catarina Civil Defense remains on alert, warning of continued risks of flooding, landslides, and further storms through the weekend. As a preventive measure, floodgates at the South Dam in Ituporanga and the West Dam in Taió have been closed.
