Overview

By late September, weather emergencies in Santa Catarina expanded to affect 60 municipalities. Heavy rainfall, landslides, strong winds, and hail caused widespread disruption. By early October, conditions in Guaramirim began to normalize as the Rio Itapocu started to recede. However, severe storms and high winds have since caused significant structural damage across the state. In Chapecó, wind gusts reaching 86.3 km/h tore off metal roofing and caused partial structural collapses; one building wall collapsed onto a vehicle, causing minor injuries to two occupants. Additionally, heavy rainfall has caused rising river levels in the northern municipalities of Rio Negrinho and Mafra, which remain under close monitoring. On the SC-355 highway, a fallen tree struck a vehicle, though no injuries were reported.

By mid-October, extreme weather intensified. In São Bento do Sul, authorities declared a state of emergency after receiving more than 80 mm of rain, which triggered flooding, landslides, and blocked roads. In Princesa, a ‘Super El Niño’ event led to 337 mm of rain in the first 13 days of October, surpassing historical averages and submerging bridges, roads, and corn crops in the Rio Maria Preta area.
