Santa Catarina storms cause widespread damage and emergency declarations

Severe storms and heavy rainfall have impacted dozens of municipalities across Santa Catarina, Brazil, causing widespread damage to infrastructure, homes, and vehicles. The Defesa Civil reports that the storms have affected up to 55 cities, with at least 12 municipalities—including Águas de Chapecó, Canelinha, Canoinhas, Guatambú, Herval d’Oeste, Irineópolis, Joaçaba, Lebon Régis, Luzerna, Três Barras, Treze Tílias, and Vargem Bonita—declaring a state of emergency.

The humanitarian impact is significant, with reports indicating at least 211 people have been left homeless and 215 others displaced. In Três Barras, 35 residences were hit, and authorities are investigating whether a tornado occurred due to the intensity of the winds.

Hydrological concerns remain high as river levels rise. The Rio Iguaçu in São Mateus do Sul rose 28 centimeters in 24 hours, and the Rio Negro is also trending toward emergency levels. Infrastructure damage includes landslides, fallen trees, and blocked roads, such as the temporary closure of the SC-156. While most state highways have seen traffic restored, some sections remain under restricted operation.
