Santa Catarina expands sewage system and educates youth on climate

The state water and sanitation company CASAN is installing a sewage network in Florianópolis' Monte Verde district and neighboring areas, projected to serve about 33,000 residents. As part of the programme, the non‑profit SEEDE organized a climate‑change workshop for 12‑ to 15‑year‑old participants, covering water‑saving habits and sustainable transport. The activities are integrated into CASAN’s socio‑environmental program, approved by the state environmental institute and the municipal education department.

Separately, Jornal ND marked its 20‑year anniversary with a seminar on Santa Catarina’s basic‑sanitation challenges. Experts, public officials and private‑sector representatives discussed how the state can meet the federal Marco Legal de Saneamento targets – 99 % water access and 90 % sewage collection and treatment by 2033 – highlighting financing models, public‑private partnerships and new technologies.
