Santa Catarina faces heavy rain and flooding

Heavy rainfall across the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, has caused significant infrastructure damage and prompted emergency measures. In São Bento do Sul, authorities declared a state of emergency following more than 80 mm of precipitation. The rainfall led to flooding, landslides, broken pipes, blocked roads, and fallen trees affecting power lines. The decree allows for the mobilization of municipal agencies, the recruitment of volunteers, and the emergency procurement of goods and services to facilitate reconstruction.

In the municipality of Princesa, the situation is even more severe due to a critical Super El Niño event. The region recorded 337 mm of rain within the first 13 days of October, surpassing the historical monthly average of 210 mm to 280 mm. This extreme volume has submerged bridges, damaged roads, and flooded corn crops, particularly impacting the Rio Maria Preta area.
