Santa Catarina Firefighters graduate first adapted Bombeiro Mirim class
The Military Firefighters Corps of Santa Catarina (CBMSC) has graduated its first class of the ‘Bombeiro Mirim’ program specifically adapted for students with disabilities. The ceremony took place in Orleans, in the southern region of the state, where 45 students from the Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (Apae) received their certificates.
This pilot project in the Carbonífera region involved restructuring the program's curriculum to be more visual and playful, ensuring accessibility for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and other syndromes. While the core educational content—including accident prevention, first aid, and how to contact emergency services—remained the same, the teaching methods were modified to facilitate comprehension.
Instructors noted that the adaptation allowed students to successfully learn critical information, such as the emergency number 193. The program, which has historically served tens of thousands of students across various municipalities, aims to expand educational access and participation for people with disabilities through these specialized formats.
