Santa Cruz de Tenerife faces repeated arson attacks on waste containers

Residents of the El Sobradillo neighbourhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife report a pattern of intentional fires targeting municipal waste containers. On the night of the latest incident, four containers on Calle El Justillo were set alight and destroyed before firefighters could prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings. A second fire, likely arson, ignited a vehicle on nearby Calle Juan Rumeu García, requiring a rapid response from the island’s fire services and local police patrols.

The local police have a special surveillance unit operating in the area, yet the incidents continue, prompting residents to avoid parking near the collection points and to call for additional cameras and stronger enforcement. Authorities are working to identify the perpetrators, but the community remains unsettled by the ongoing vandalism.

The municipality has registered the latest episode as part of a broader effort to curb such criminal acts, while neighbours express fear and demand decisive action to restore safety in the neighbourhood.
