Santa Cruz de Tenerife photo-red traffic lights out of service
The two photo-red traffic light systems in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have been out of service for at least two weeks. These devices, which use cameras to detect and penalize drivers who run red lights, are currently inactive because the City Council has not yet renewed the municipal contract for their management and maintenance.
Currently, the systems are located at the intersection of San Sebastián Avenue and La Salle, and in the Miramar area near Casa Cuna. Because the equipment is offline, no traffic violations are being processed or fined. Last year, these two locations accounted for over 3,500 sanctions, each carrying a 200 euro fine and the loss of four driver's license points.
Gladis de León, the Councilor for Citizen Security, stated that work is underway to tender a new contract, with the goal of awarding the service to a new company by the end of the year or early next year. The municipality is also considering expanding the system to additional locations, including the General Road of El Rosario, to enhance road safety near public schools.
