Santa Cruz de Tenerife urban mobility and traffic updates

Overview

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the municipal government is managing various updates to urban mobility and traffic infrastructure.

Two photo-red traffic light systems, located at the intersection of San Sebastián Avenue and La Salle and in the Miramar area, have been out of service for at least two weeks due to the City Council not yet renewing the municipal contract for their management and maintenance. Consequently, no traffic violations are being processed or fined at these locations. Last year, these two sites accounted for over 3,500 sanctions. Councilor for Citizen Security, Gladis de León, indicated that a new contract tender is underway, with the goal of awarding the service by the end of 2026 or early 2027. The municipality is also considering expanding the system to other areas, such as the General Road of El Rosario, to improve safety near schools.

Parallel to these issues, the City Council is implementing a roadmap to update the traffic light network to comply with national regulations. This project involves 262 interventions to modify signal patterns and enhance pedestrian safety, costing over 260,000 euros. Work is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, with 13 locations already completed.

Local authorities are also addressing the modernization of the taxi sector through a dedicated committee. Discussions focus on fleet renewal, electric vehicle integration, charging infrastructure, and subsidies for security cameras and vehicles adapted for people with reduced mobility. Furthermore, the government has approved a project to reform the municipal mobility and road safety ordinance, replacing the version in effect since 1985, with implementation expected by early 2027.
