Santa Cruz Socialist Party criticizes delay in Local Accommodation suspension

Leonilde Cassiano, a municipal deputy for the Socialist Party (PS) in Santa Cruz, has criticized the local executive for its handling of the suspension of new Local Accommodation (AL) licenses. Although the Municipal Council announced in May that the municipality had reached 1,000 registered AL establishments, the suspension of new requests is not scheduled to take effect until October 19.

Cassiano argued that this delay demonstrates a “lack of strategy and decision-making capacity” by the municipal executive. She questioned the months of inaction between the initial announcement and the implementation date. Furthermore, she pointed out a perceived contradiction in the administration's behavior, noting that while expressing concern over the pressure AL puts on housing availability, officials continue to attend inaugurations of new local accommodations.

The deputy noted that the need to suspend AL in collective housing was a proposal previously championed by Pedro Diniz during the 2025 local elections to protect housing access and free up properties for long-term rental.
