Santa Marinella: Archaeologists find ancient Etruscan harbor

Archaeologists have discovered significant underwater structures off the coast of Santa Marinella, approximately 50 kilometers north of Rome. The find consists of large, worked limestone blocks located about 90 meters from the current shoreline.

Researchers believe these structures may form part of an Etruscan harbor dating back more than 2,300 years. The layout suggests an L-shaped facility that likely enclosed a protected basin of roughly 3,000 square meters. The largest section of the suspected pier measures over 60 meters in length and reaches widths of more than five meters.

The site includes a small channel designed to facilitate water circulation and prevent the accumulation of sand and sediment. Notably, an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Minerva was found only 130 meters away from the archaeological site.
