Etruscan archaeological discovery in Santa Marinella
Overview
Archaeologists have identified significant underwater structures off the coast of Santa Marinella, Italy, which are believed to be part of an Etruscan harbor dating back more than 2,300 years. The site features large limestone blocks forming an L-shaped facility with a protected basin of approximately 3,000 square meters, including a pier over 60 meters long and a channel designed for water circulation. An ancient sanctuary dedicated to Minerva was also located near the site.
Following these findings, the Port Authority of Civitavecchia issued a maritime ban for the waters off the Pyrgi archaeological site from September 1 to September 21, 2026. The restrictions prohibit swimming, fishing, navigation, anchoring, and diving to facilitate an underwater archaeological reconnaissance campaign by researchers from Sapienza University of Rome. The measure is intended to protect the seafloor heritage and ensure the safety of the research operators.
