Santa Marinella: Maritime ban issued for Pyrgi archaeological site

The Port Authority of Civitavecchia has issued a maritime ban for the waters off the ancient archaeological site of Pyrgi in Santa Marinella. The restriction is in effect from September 1 to September 21, 2026.

The measure prohibits swimming, fishing (both professional and recreational), navigation, anchoring, mooring, and all forms of diving in the designated area. These restrictions are not due to environmental or water quality concerns, but to facilitate a new underwater archaeological reconnaissance campaign.

Archaeologists from Sapienza University of Rome are conducting the research to investigate the seabed related to the ancient Etruscan port. The ban aims to ensure the safety of the research operators and to protect the archaeological heritage that may be located on the seafloor.
