Santa Rosa de Lima faces water crisis due to drought

The municipality of Santa Rosa de Lima, located in northern Bolívar, Colombia, is facing a severe water shortage due to declining water levels in the Canal del Dique. This reduction in flow is attributed to drought conditions and the El Niño phenomenon, with low precipitation expected to persist through February.

Mayor Harvis Bello reported that the regional aqueduct system is over 70 years old, resulting in water being supplied only once or twice a week in certain areas. The shortage has forced the local government to use water tankers to supply essential services, including the Mayor's office.

The crisis is placing a significant financial burden on families. Residents must purchase water tanks at prices ranging from 5,000 to 6,000 pesos each. With an average household requiring three to four tanks daily, monthly costs can reach approximately 750,000 pesos, forcing many to choose between purchasing water and buying food.
