Santa Teresa increases daily cattle export capacity to 1,200 head
Livestock export capacities at the Chihuahua-US border are undergoing changes. The Santa Teresa crossing has increased its authorized daily cattle export capacity to 1,200 head, up from 1,100 the previous week. This represents an approximate 9% increase in authorized volume, though actual movement depends on animals meeting sanitary requirements.
Further expansion is expected at Puerto Palomas, which is scheduled to incorporate 800 additional daily spaces starting October 26. If successful, the combined capacity of Santa Teresa and Puerto Palomas could reach 2,000 cattle per day.
Despite these capacity increases, recent trade activity has shown fluctuations. At the Santa Teresa port in New Mexico, weekly totals reached 1,350 head, with a single Tuesday reporting only 400 head crossing. This uneven flow contrasts with the port's historical role of handling roughly 40% of Mexican feeder cattle entering the United States prior to previous border shutdowns.
