Santander UK and Deutsche Bank fund battery storage projects in the UK and Australia

Santander UK has provided a senior debt facility to bring Brockwell Energy's 60 MW/120 MWh Inchbean farm battery energy storage system in East Ayrshire, Scotland, to financial close. The project is expected to deliver balancing services that support renewable integration, improve grid stability and enhance energy security. Claire Heaton of Santander said the financing backs a significant investment in regional energy infrastructure, while Brockwell Energy’s managing director Martin McCaffery highlighted the role of battery storage in a lower‑carbon electricity network.

Deutsche Bank has committed $60 million to the third stage of Quinbrook’s Supernode battery storage project in Queensland, Australia, as part of a $331 million senior secured, non‑recourse financing package. The Supernode precinct, located near the South Pine transmission hub in Brendale, will add to the project's total of 780 MW of capacity and over 3,000 MWh of storage. Contracts with Origin Energy and state‑owned Stanwell provide revenue certainty, helping the batteries absorb excess renewable generation and dispatch power when demand peaks, thereby reducing reliance on emissions‑intensive generation.
