Santarém to host guided tours of Capuchos Municipal Cemetery

The Municipality of Santarém is organizing two guided tours of the Capuchos Municipal Cemetery on October 10 and 18. These visits are part of the 5th edition of the Cultural Week in Cemeteries, a national initiative that explores funerary spaces as sites of memory, history, and art.

Led by José Raimundo Noras, the first session on October 10, titled ‘From convent to Cemetery: eternity seen from Capuchos?’, will examine the 19th-century urban transformations that led to the creation of the necropolis following the extinction of the Capuchos convent and the parishes of São Lourenço and São Julião.

The second session on October 18, titled ‘Capuchos Cemetery: field of equality?’, will present the site as an open-air museum. The tour will highlight various artistic styles and the tombs of historical figures, including Padre Chiquito, Francisco Nunes da Silva, and the Marquês de Sá da Bandeira, while offering views over the Lezíria.
