Cultural and historical heritage initiatives in Santarém

The Santarém region in Portugal continues to host various cultural and historical initiatives aimed at exploring local heritage and development.

In October, the Municipality of Santarém organized guided tours of the Capuchos Municipal Cemetery as part of the 5th Cultural Week in Cemeteries. These sessions, led by José Raimundo Noras, examined the site’s 19th-century urban transformations and its status as an open-air museum containing the tombs of historical figures.

Recent activities include the ‘Regresso às Escolas, Santarém Cidade Educadora’ tour, led by historian José Raimundo Noras, which focused on the city’s educational history and influential local figures. A tour regarding traditional commerce is scheduled for November 21.

Other regional events include the 45th National Gastronomy Festival at Casa do Campino on October 24, which will feature local producers and Vinho Verde wines. Additionally, journalist José Goulão is set to present his book, ‘Genocídio na Terra Santa’, at the Sociedade Recreativa Operária. This event will include a discussion with Carlos Almeida of the Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and for Peace in the Middle East, followed by a traditional Palestinian dinner.

Other scheduled activities include the presentation of Fernando Ferreira’s book, ‘Vale de Santarém — O futuro que o presente esqueceu no passado’, which proposes strategies for community growth and the preservation of local traditions.
