Santiago communes face water cuts as Chile's water scarcity intensifies
Aguas Andinas announced scheduled water supply interruptions in four Santiago Metropolitan communes — Independencia, Conchalí, Vitacura and Las Condes — from 15:00 on 28 May 2026 until early hours of 29 May 2026. The cuts, lasting up to 15 hours, are for valve changes and network renewal. Residents were advised to store potable water in clean containers.
The same week, the Association of Municipalities of Chile (AMUCH) convened a seminar on water management and security, gathering Environment Sub‑Secretary José Ignacio Vial, local mayors, private‑sector representatives and academics. Participants highlighted Chile’s ranking among the 16 most water‑stressed nations, 14 consecutive years of drought, and the need for integrated basin management. Aguas Andinas CEO José Sáez presented the “Biociudad” roadmap, including the “Retorno Maipo” project to reuse treated water and increase basin availability.
