Santiago de Compostela protesters denounce housing racism
A group of racialized individuals camping in Santiago de Compostela’s Praza do Obradoiro has organized an anti-racist and anti-colonial demonstration. Supported by the Foro Galego de Inmigración, the protest aims to denounce racism encountered when attempting to access housing.
Coinciding with October 12, the organizers stated there is ‘nothing to celebrate’ and intend to remember the genocide of indigenous peoples in the Americas. The collective highlighted that the housing market presents structural barriers that, when combined with racism from landlords and real estate agencies, make housing nearly impossible to access for migrants. They further criticized the current economic system for creating deep inequalities and treating housing as a tool for wealth accumulation rather than a right.
