Paraguay doctors suspend strike following salary agreement
The National Union of Doctors (Sinamed) in Paraguay has officially suspended its planned strike for September 21 and 22 following a unanimous agreement with the government. The deal includes a salary readjustment of G. 2 million per contract for 12-hour weekly shifts, which represents the largest increase for the sector in 14 years.
President Santiago Peña described the agreement as a “victory for Paraguay,” noting that the state has also increased investments in healthcare infrastructure and medical supplies. Alongside the medical agreement, the government also announced a 5% salary readjustment for teachers, scheduled to take effect in 2027.
In addition to salary increases, the negotiations addressed labor conditions and hospital staffing. The medical union expressed satisfaction with the government's response to their four primary demands, which included improved working conditions and the hiring of more medical personnel.
