Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza reopens to the public in Rome
The Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, a Baroque masterpiece designed by Francesco Borromini, has reopened to the public following an extensive restoration process. Located within the courtyard of the Palazzo della Sapienza in Rome, the site serves as a central complex housing the State Archives of Rome and the Biblioteca Alessandrina.
The restoration work focused on recovering the original aesthetic intended by Borromini, specifically highlighting the various shades of white used in the interior to enhance the depth and movement of the stucco work. The church is noted for its unique geometric design, featuring a six-pointed star inscribed in a hexagon and a distinctive spiral lantern.
As part of the ‘Aperti per voi’ project, the church is open for free visits from Monday to Friday, between 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. Tours are facilitated by volunteers from the Touring Club Italiano in collaboration with the State Archives of Rome and the Diocese of Rome.
