Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza restoration and reopening
Overview
The Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza in Rome, a Baroque masterpiece designed by Francesco Borromini, has reopened to the public following an extensive restoration project. The work was managed by the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma and funded through PNRR Caput Mundi funds.
The restoration focused on recovering the original aesthetic intended by Borromini, specifically highlighting various shades of white in the interior to enhance the depth and movement of the stucco work. The site, which houses the State Archives of Rome and the Biblioteca Alessandrina, is noted for its unique geometric design and spiral lantern.
As part of the ‘Aperti per voi’ project, the church is open for free visits from Monday to Friday, between 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. Tours are facilitated by volunteers from the Touring Club Italiano in collaboration with the State Archives of Rome and the Diocese of Rome.
