CAASD manages water shortages and infrastructure repairs in Santo Domingo

The Corporación del Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Santo Domingo (CAASD) is managing a dual challenge of severe drought and infrastructure needs in the Gran Santo Domingo region. A prolonged lack of rainfall has reduced potable water production by 30% to 35% across several systems. Specifically, the Haina-Manoguayabo aqueduct has seen a 68% drop in production, while the Isabela and Isa-Mana systems have also faced reductions exceeding 60%.

To mitigate the shortage, CAASD has activated a contingency plan involving water transfers between systems and the deployment of at least 40 water trucks to provide free distribution in heavily affected areas such as Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand, and Santo Domingo Oeste.

Simultaneously, CAASD is working on long-term infrastructure improvements. Director Felipe Suberví reported a 38% increase in daily water production since 2020 through the rehabilitation of aqueducts, such as the Barrera de Salinidad. The agency is also rehabilitating several wastewater treatment plants, including those in Hato Nuevo, Caballona, and Los Alcarrizos, to address environmental concerns and improve sanitation for the region's 3.7 million inhabitants.
