Water shortages in Santo Domingo due to drought

Overview

A prolonged drought beginning in May has caused significant reductions in potable water production for the Greater Santo Domingo region. The Corporación del Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Santo Domingo (CAASD) reported that several major systems have seen production drops, with the Haina-Manoguayabo system experiencing a 68% decrease in capacity. Other systems, including Isabela and Isa-Mana, have also faced declines exceeding 60%.

To address the shortages in areas such as Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand, and Santo Domingo Oeste, CAASD activated a contingency plan. This response includes transferring water from the Valdesia-Santo Domingo aqueduct and deploying water trucks for free distribution.

In addition to managing the immediate drought, CAASD is pursuing long-term infrastructure improvements. Director Felipe Suberví noted that rehabilitation efforts have contributed to a 38% increase in daily water production since 2020. Current efforts include the rehabilitation of various aqueducts and wastewater treatment plants to improve sanitation for the region’s 3.7 million inhabitants.
