Santo Domingo transport services face technical upgrades and service complaints
The Metropolitan Transport Company (EMT) is implementing an intensive overhaul of the Santo Domingo Metro to address maintenance deficits and achieve a 99% service availability rate. Jhael Isa, director of the EMT, noted that the 17-year-old network, which carries over 300,000 daily passengers, requires specialized preventive upkeep due to aging components. Key improvements include the deployment of a computerized synchronization system for the three electrical substations—La Isabela, UASD, and Paraiso—to prevent single-point power failures.
In a separate transport issue, residents of Ciudad Juan Bosch have raised concerns regarding the OMSA bus corridor. Despite promises of 25 new buses equipped with air conditioning and Wi-Fi, community members report that fewer than 10 units are currently in operation. Residents are questioning the recent fare increase from 15 to 35 pesos, arguing that the higher cost is being applied to older vehicles that lack the promised amenities.
