Santo Domingo water production drops 68% due to drought

A prolonged drought since May has caused a reduction of up to 68% in potable water production for several major systems supplying Greater Santo Domingo. The Corporación del Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Santo Domingo (CAASD) reported significant decreases in river flows from the Haina, La Isabela, Nizao, Isa, Mana, and Duey basins.

The Haina-Manoguayabo system has been the most severely impacted, dropping from a capacity of 91 million gallons per day to just 21 million gallons. The Isabela aqueduct and the Isa-Mana and Duey systems have also seen production declines exceeding 60%.

Water shortages are affecting sectors in Santo Domingo Oeste, Los Alcarrizos, Pantoja, Pedro Brand, and various areas of the Distrito Nacional, including Gascue and Zona Universitaria. In response, CAASD has activated a contingency plan that includes transferring water from the Valdesia-Santo Domingo aqueduct and deploying additional water trucks to assist affected areas.
