Santorini tourist boats face tax evasion crackdown

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has uncovered widespread tax evasion among tourist boat operators in Santorini. During a targeted operation titled “Cruise I’ll Take You 2026,” inspectors conducted surprise checks at Vlychada port and other mooring locations as catamarans and day-cruisers returned from excursions.

Using algorithmic analysis of tax and statistical data, authorities inspected 26 vessels, finding violations in 12 of them—a 46% non-compliance rate. The identified breaches included failing to issue or issuing inaccurate receipts, refusing to present required fiscal documents, accepting cash payments exceeding the 500-euro limit, and applying incorrect VAT rates.

The total value of transactions linked to these violations amounted to 92,000 euros, resulting in 43,000 euros in fines. AADE has stated that investigations will continue, with authorities planning to cross-reference electronic and banking data to determine if these incidents represent systematic practices. Further audits may be extended to previous, unexamined tax periods.
