Santorini tourism regulatory and pricing issues

The tourism sector in Santorini is facing scrutiny regarding financial practices and pricing. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) launched a targeted audit operation, ‘Cruise I Will Take You 2026’, which utilized algorithmic analysis to inspect tourist vessels at Vlychada port and other locations.

During these inspections, authorities found a 46% non-compliance rate among 26 boats, with 12 vessels committing violations such as failing to issue accurate receipts, refusing to present documents, or applying incorrect VAT rates. Other identified offenses included accepting cash payments exceeding 500 euros. These infractions, linked to 92,000 euros in transactions, resulted in 43,000 euros in fines. AADE has indicated that investigations will continue, with authorities potentially extending audits to previous unexamined tax periods. To determine if these incidents represent systemic practices, officials plan to cross-reference electronic and banking data.

Simultaneously, visitors have reported issues with excessive costs at local hospitality establishments. British tourists have specifically raised complaints regarding high prices and unexpected charges near Fira. Reported instances include an 81 euro bill for three prawns, two coffees, and a plate of fava. Another traveler reported being charged 28 euros for an instant coffee and a piece of cake.

Complaints also highlight problematic service practices, such as establishments with low ratings refusing card payments to insist on cash and requesting specific tips, including one instance of a requested 20 euro tip. In response to these grievances, some staff members have defended the pricing by citing the value of the views provided by the establishments.
