Santos Dumont Airport resumes operations after private jet runway excursion
Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro resumed operations on Friday morning following a runway incident involving a private jet on Thursday afternoon. An Embraer EMB-500 (prefix PS-VEE) skidded off the runway during landing and came to rest on the adjacent grass. No injuries were reported among the pilot and a crew member.
The incident caused the runway to close for nearly seven hours, leading to significant disruptions in the regional aviation network. Infraero reported that 71 flights were canceled and 15 were redirected to Galeão International Airport. The disruption also impacted São Paulo, where Congonhas Airport saw 37 flight cancellations involving routes to or from Santos Dumont.
On Friday morning, at least 13 departures were canceled because aircraft scheduled to overnight at Santos Dumont were unable to land the previous night. Affected airlines included Azul, Latam, and Gol. The Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) and the Fire Department have initiated investigations to determine the cause of the excursion.
