Santos Dumont Airport developments and incident
Overview
The Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro has seen recent developments regarding infrastructure and operational safety.
In mid-August, the Brazilian Ministry of Ports and Airports authorized Infraero to permit the construction of a hotel on approximately 11,800 square meters of airport property. The authorization includes a 20-year contract to facilitate large-scale investment and contains provisions ensuring the project remains intact even if the airport undergoes a future private concession.
Later in the month, the airport experienced a temporary closure following a runway excursion involving a private Embraer EMB-500 jet (prefix PS-VEE). The aircraft, registered to VEE One – Manutenção e Serviços Ltda., skidded off the runway into a grassy area near the terminal during landing on a Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported among the two crew members on board.
The incident triggered the airport’s emergency plan and required the use of a crane to remove the aircraft. The runway was closed for approximately seven hours, with operations resuming around 11:00 PM. The excursion caused significant disruptions to the regional air network, resulting in 71 flight cancellations and 15 diversions to Galeão International Airport.
The shutdown also created a cascade effect at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo, where 37 flights were canceled due to the interruption of the Rio-São Paulo air bridge. Residual impacts continued into the following Friday morning, with at least 13 additional flights canceled at Santos Dumont because aircraft scheduled to overnight at the terminal were unable to land. Affected airlines included Azul, Latam, and Gol. The Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa) and the Fire Department have been tasked with investigating the cause.
