U.S. warns politicians linked to cartels face accountability
Sara Carter, Director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, has warned that the United States will identify and hold accountable any politicians or officials in Mexico or the U.S. who collaborate with drug cartels. Carter noted that the U.S. government may pursue measures such as visa revocations through the Department of State and Department of Justice against those suspected of aiding criminal organizations.
While expressing satisfaction with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration and the ongoing intelligence cooperation between the two nations, Carter emphasized that the Trump administration seeks increased action. This includes a call for Mexico to allocate more resources to its security forces and military to combat groups like the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
In a related financial crackdown, the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit have coordinated to target the economic networks of cartels. OFAC recently designated 55 subjects—comprising 39 individuals and 16 entities—allegedly linked to the CJNG’s financial operations. Mexico has also added these individuals and several companies to its list of blocked persons to disrupt the flow of illicit funds.
