Sara Duterte impeachment trial focuses on unexplained wealth charge

The House prosecution panel has withdrawn three of the four impeachment articles against Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte, leaving only the charge of unexplained wealth. The withdrawn articles involved allegations of misuse of confidential funds, bribery, and grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family.

Lead prosecutor Gerville Luistro stated that narrowing the case to Article II—which covers unexplained wealth, violations of Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs), and prohibited business interests—would streamline the Senate proceedings. The decision means 32 witnesses will no longer be required to testify. Defense counsel Sheila Sison criticized the move as “completely unfair,” arguing that evidence for the dropped charges had already been presented in public hearings.

During the proceedings, forensic expert Alexander Cabrera provided a hypothetical upper estimate of Duterte’s alleged undeclared wealth at P1.5 billion, nearly double his original P817.87-million estimate. This higher figure accounts for previously excluded transactions, confidential funds, and higher assumed ownership interests in GenCorp.

Duterte has dismissed the investigations as politically motivated attempts to undermine her ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
