Sara Duterte impeachment trial narrows as prosecution drops three articles

The impeachment trial of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte may conclude sooner than expected following the prosecution's decision to withdraw three of the four original impeachment articles. Lead prosecutor Representative Gerville Luistro indicated that the remaining adjudication focuses solely on Article II, which concerns allegations of unexplained wealth.

While the defense was initially allotted up to 31 days for evidence presentation, Luistro suggested this timeframe should be reduced now that the scope of the trial has narrowed. Although there is hope among prosecutors that a verdict could be reached before Christmas, the exact timeline remains dependent on the defense and the Senate impeachment court.

The withdrawn articles previously included allegations regarding the misuse of confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, as well as claims of corruption, bribery, and political destabilization. Vice President Duterte has expressed that she is not surprised by the prosecution's move to drop these articles.
