Sara Duterte impeachment trial narrows to unexplained wealth charge
The impeachment trial of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has been streamlined after the prosecution withdrew three of the four original articles of impeachment. The removed charges included the alleged misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds, bribery of Department of Education staff, and grave threats against high-ranking officials.
The remaining charge focuses on the accumulation of unexplained wealth not declared in Duterte’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs). Forensic financial analyst Alexander Cabrera testified that there were P817.87 million in undeclared assets and income associated with Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, between 2022 and 2025.
House prosecution spokesperson Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong expressed confidence in securing a conviction, citing constitutional violations regarding undisclosed business interests and dual salaries. Meanwhile, Makati Business Club chair Edgar Chua has urged the Senate to conclude the trial by the end of the year to avoid distracting lawmakers from legislative duties and budget reviews.
