Israel: Sara Netanyahu sparks controversy over October 7 attack claims
Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has sparked significant political tension by suggesting that Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party and former deputy chief of staff, had prior knowledge of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. In an interview with Channel 14, she claimed Golan was already prepared and on-site during the early hours of the attack, while others, including the Prime Minister, were unaware of the unfolding situation.
Yair Golan has responded by demanding a public apology and retraction within 24 hours, threatening a defamation lawsuit seeking 2.5 million shekels in damages. Golan has dismissed the claims as a false conspiracy theory intended to recast those who acted heroically during the attack as traitors.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has attempted to distance himself from his wife's comments, stating he does not share her views. He maintains that while there was a massive intelligence and operational failure, he was not personally alerted in time to prevent the invasion. The controversy arrives as Israel approaches critical elections, amid public debate regarding the responsibility for the massacre that killed 1,221 people and resulted in the kidnapping of 251 hostages.
