Israeli political controversy over October 7 intelligence

Political and legal tensions in Israel have intensified regarding the intelligence and leadership failures surrounding the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Initially, controversy arose when Sara Netanyahu suggested that Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, had prior knowledge of the Hamas attack. Golan dismissed these claims as a “false conspiracy theory” and threatened a defamation lawsuit. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to distance himself from these comments, acknowledging a massive intelligence failure while maintaining he was not personally alerted in time.

This scrutiny expanded to include legal actions by the Prime Minister against the media. Netanyahu’s office announced preparations for a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper Haaretz following a report alleging that UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had warned Netanyahu of planned movements by Yahya Sinwar ten days before the attack. The Prime Minister’s office denied these allegations, labeling them “absolute lies.”

Legal proceedings have since escalated following specific allegations made by Sara Netanyahu during a Channel 14 interview. She suggested that Golan was “already dressed and ready” at dawn during the attacks, implying he possessed prior knowledge. Yair Golan has responded by filing a defamation lawsuit seeking 2.5 million shekels in damages and a formal retraction, characterizing the claims as malicious conspiracy theories intended to deflect responsibility for the October 7 disaster. Golan further argues that these statements constitute incitement to violence and have endangered his safety.

These developments occur amid a highly polarized political climate as Israel approaches general elections on October 27. Recent polling by Lazar Research indicates a significant decline for the Likud party, with support dropping to 19 seats, while the Yashar party, led by Gadi Eisenkot, remains the largest in the survey with 25 seats.
