Spain battles multiple massive wildfires as thousands flee and millions of hectares burn
Spain is fighting several large forest fires this summer. In the Aragon region near Orés, the blaze has consumed roughly 15,400–16,000 ha, prompting the evacuation of about 1,000 residents from villages such as Orés, Asín, Luesia and neighboring towns. Around 450–500 firefighters, the military emergency unit (UME), bulldozers and more than 25 aircraft are engaged in containment efforts.
In the central province of Guadalajara, the La Mierla fire has burned near 13,000 ha and forced the evacuation of roughly 800–1,000 people from dozens of villages. About 350 firefighters and 25 aerial assets are operating on the ground.
Across Spain, the fire season has already scorched roughly 50,000 ha with 18 major incidents recorded. A separate blaze in Andalusia’s Almería province killed 13 people and destroyed around 70,000 ha, marking one of the deadliest forest fires in recent Spanish history.
Authorities continue to monitor wind and heat conditions, deploy additional resources, and prepare for the return of displaced residents where fire lines have been secured.
