Sarajevo Siege Memorial Events Held in Bosnia and Italy

A series of cultural events commemorating the 1992‑1996 siege of Sarajevo were organised in Italy and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In southern Italy, the association Diffondiamo idee di valore presented a five‑day programme (June 25‑28) in Lecce, Corigliano d’Otranto and Melpignano, featuring talks, testimonies, music and theatre that linked the siege’s history to contemporary issues such as propaganda, nationalism and media manipulation.

In Sarajevo, the exhibition “Sarajevo, from war to peace – thirty years later” was inaugurated in the cloister of the Catholic school “Sv. Josip”. Cardinal Vinko Puljić highlighted the historic ties between Bosnia and Italy, especially the assistance provided by Puglia during the siege. The show, based on Franco Giuliano’s book, includes photographs, letters and artefacts, and will later move to the Vijećnica building. Parallel displays are planned in Italian venues, including the Politecnico di Bari, to further share the memory of the conflict.
