Sarawak promotes digital preservation of cultural heritage
Sarawak is intensifying efforts to preserve and document its diverse cultural heritage through digital innovation and youth engagement. In Kuching, the Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHE) initiative is involving students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to systematically record historical assets. This includes documenting the architecture and social histories of traditional shop houses along Main Bazaar and heritage homes in Kampung Nombor through video and photography.
Additionally, Sarawakian authorities are emphasizing the need to protect lesser-represented ethnic heritages, such as the Bisaya, Lun Bawang, Kedayan, and Jati Miriek communities. Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has encouraged the younger generation to utilize social media and digital technology to promote traditional dances, music, attire, and customs. These initiatives aim to support the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 by promoting sustainable tourism and ensuring cultural identities remain relevant in a digital age.
