Sarawak to establish international Islamic school for Pacific students

The Sarawak state government plans to establish an international Islamic school in Kuching with a capacity for approximately 400 students. The initiative aims to provide quality education to Muslim children from minority communities in the Pacific region, specifically targeting students from nations such as Vanuatu and Fiji who face economic constraints.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that the institution will combine Islamic studies with the Cambridge curriculum. This approach is designed to equip graduates with international language skills, enabling them to return to their home communities and contribute to local development and Islamic dakwah.

The proposed school is expected to begin operations in 2027. To support the program, the state government is considering scholarships for high-potential students to study alongside local Sarawakian students, fostering cross-cultural exchange and academic excellence.
