Establishment of International Islamic Secondary School in__

Overview

The Sarawak Islamic Council and the state government are planning the establishment of the International Islamic Secondary School Sarawak (SMAIS) in Kuching, with operations expected to begin in January 2027.

The school will feature a curriculum that integrates the National Curriculum and IGCSE Cambridge programmes with Al-Azhar-based religious studies and Quranic memorization. While the permanent facility is slated for completion in March 2027, the initial cohort of 60 students will be temporarily housed at Sekolah Rendah Datuk Murtada Haji Daud.

Beyond local students, the initiative aims to serve Muslim children from Pacific minority communities, such as those in Fiji and Vanuatu, who face economic barriers to quality education. The state is considering scholarships to facilitate this international exchange. Additionally, the Sarawak Islamic Council intends to expand religious secondary education by establishing another school in Bintulu to reach underserved areas like Betong.
