Sarcopenia prevalence and resistance training benefits identified in medical studies

Research highlights the prevalence and treatment of sarcopenia, a condition characterized by low muscle mass and strength. A study conducted at the Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge found that approximately 15% of patients—one in seven—evaluated before total hip replacement surgery presented with sarcopenia. Researchers noted that these patients often face higher rates of diabetes, cardiac issues, and cognitive decline, which may impact postoperative recovery and complication rates.

Complementary evidence from a scoping review indicates that resistance training is an effective therapeutic strategy for older adults suffering from sarcopenic obesity. The review of studies from the last decade shows that resistance exercise consistently improves muscle strength and functional independence. However, the effectiveness of these treatments is closely tied to the frequency and duration of the protocols, which should be implemented in an individualized and progressive manner.
