Sarcopenia Prevention Strategies for Older Adults

Sarcopenia, the age‑related loss of muscle mass and strength, can be mitigated through a combination of lifestyle measures. Regular resistance training such as weight‑lifting, body‑weight exercises, or band work stimulates muscle growth, while aerobic activities like walking, swimming, or cycling improve circulation and overall health. Adequate protein intake from meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes or plant‑based sources, along with vitamins D, magnesium and potassium, supports muscle repair. Proper hydration, balanced caloric intake, sufficient sleep, and limited alcohol consumption further protect muscle tissue.

In Mexico City, the Instituto Nacional de Geriatría (INGER) runs a multidisciplinary program for older adults with sarcopenic obesity. Specialists assess strength, body composition, balance and gait to identify the condition early. Treatment combines personalized nutrition counseling, supervised therapeutic exercise, and management of comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, aiming to preserve mobility, independence and quality of life.
