Sarcopenia prevention through strength training

Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass, typically begins around age 40 and becomes increasingly evident during the 50s and 60s. Fitness expert Marcos Vázquez warns that failing to engage in strength training during middle age can significantly impact physical autonomy in later life.

Research suggests that while genetics play a role, approximately 80% of muscle health is determined by lifestyle habits, including movement, sleep, nutrition, and avoiding smoking. Maintaining muscle strength is critical for preserving balance, mobility, and the ability to perform daily tasks such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or rising from a chair.

Functional resistance exercises, such as squats, are highlighted as vital investments in future independence. These movements strengthen the quadriceps and glutes, which are essential for maintaining stability and preventing the loss of mobility that often leads to a fear of falling.
