Sardines identified by nutritionists as top canned fish choice

Nutritionists have identified canned sardines as a superior choice among canned fish due to their dense nutritional profile. Experts consulted by EatingWell highlight that sardines provide high levels of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which are essential for cardiovascular and brain health.

Beyond omega-3s, sardines are a significant source of protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. When consumed with their soft bones, they also offer a substantial amount of calcium.

A key advantage of sardines over larger predatory fish, such as tuna or salmon, is their low mercury content. Because sardines are small and occupy a lower position in the food chain, they accumulate significantly fewer toxins, making them a safer option for children and pregnant women.
